The main outlook of this late Victorian beachside home is the rear garden courtyard, facing directly onto a dominant two storey garage and studio. The architect’s refurbishment included new openings and windows to both house and garage, with rough rendered concrete finishes on both buildings creating a more substantial and appealing outlook. The interim courtyard garden was redesigned to complement the architecture, incorporating new tiling to the pool and a poolside raised garden bed with screen detail for boundary privacy. The paving layout was designed to allow plants to merge in and out of garden beds, paved zones and poolside. With a period street frontage and contemporary rendering of the rear, the flagstone paving addressed both genres. Planting suited to the coastal exposure of the front garden, is reflected in similar forms and tones with plants suited to a sheltered position at the rear. Boston Ivy and Star Jasmine clothe the walls and maximise the green outlook, reflected in the smaller courtyard spaces to each side of the house, which are directly viewable from bedrooms and bathrooms.
