A sloping site with views to the sea. The house was tucked deeply into the hillside, rising on stilts at the rear, sitting amongst sculptural, mature Eucalyptus trees. There were overlooking views from the deck but no sense of invitation into and around the steep garden. By creating a meandering path and various level terraces, the owners are now drawn outwards from the wide entertaining deck, creating interconnectedness between the garden spaces. A gravelled open space at front displays a sculptural piece, protected from the street by a copse of mixed trees and underplanting of massed grasses. Outlook onto planted embankments now allows space and light into the upper rooms. At the rear, level areas of lawn, low ground hugging shrubs and grasses, a firepit seating area and hammock create a welcoming feel at ground level and keep the upper level attention on the beautiful tree trunks.
