A favourite holiday home set amongst Moonah and Bearded Heath dunes was to be replaced and the brief was to retain the same sense of arrival through nature. While construction was carefully managed to minimize impact, the garden was designed with a gentle touch around existing pathway and natural landforms.
A sense of arrival is set with entry gate fashioned from tree branch material and the journey inwards to the home is through a grove of character-filled native trees, up and over the natural landforms. Genus loci is present with sandy gravelled paths, lightly planted native vegetation and materials that sit comfortably in this relaxed, beachy setting.
The new house’s upper storey cantilevers over a paved outdoor eating area which seamlessly transitions to a pool. This floats through the gnarled trunks, freestanding in part and separated from outdoor living spaces by delicate handwoven fencing.
Warm and organic tones and shapes in paving flow through from exterior to interior, steps are from solid pieces of stone and boulders are used as retaining and casual seating. Mounds and dunes are retained at front and rear and incorporated into quieter seating areas, a place for a reclaimed slide for child play, as well as space for outdoor showering upon returning from the beach nearby.
